Field Notes: Take a Walk. Check Your Inventory. Stay Ahead.
A day in Burbank..

Sometimes the best way to understand what's happening at a facility is pretty simple:

Take a walk.

Recently, I headed out to Burbank, California, to conduct an environmental audit for a good client of ours.

Before digging into reports, spreadsheets, and paperwork, I did what we often recommend to our clients:

I walked the facility.

I looked around.

I checked the inventory.

And I compared what I was seeing in the facility to what was documented on paper.

Because things change.

Materials get added. Inventory levels move up and down. Equipment gets relocated. Processes evolve. And sometimes, the paperwork doesn't quite keep up with what's happening on the plant floor.

That's why getting out of the office matters.

You can learn a lot by walking the facility and talking with the people who actually work there.

For this audit, the goal wasn't simply to find something wrong. It was to understand what was happening, identify anything that needed attention, and help our client stay ahead of potential compliance issues.

That's really what a good environmental audit should do.

It shouldn't be about creating a long list of problems.

It should be about finding opportunities to fix things before they become problems.

The Glasshopper Take

You don't always need a complicated process to stay ahead.

Sometimes, you just need to get out of the office and take a look.

Take a walk.
Check your inventory.
Stay ahead.

It's a simple approach, but we've found it works.

And sometimes, the best compliance tool you have is a good pair of shoes.
